| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The smallest PocketWizard radio ever, the MiniTT1TM Transmitter locks onto the camera's hot shoe supporting an on-camera flash with its own hot shoe while working with remote PocketWizard units. Remotes can be one or more PocketWizard FlexTT5TM Transceivers connected to Canon E-TTL II flashes or any PocketWizard Receiver for triggering flash or remote cameras.
The MiniTT1 Transmitter is easy to use; just slide in place and begin to shoot. The new PocketWizard ControlTLTM System interprets the complex E-TTL II data being sent through the camera's hot shoe and digitally transmits it in a reliable radio signal. Change the flash compensation dial on the camera, and those commands pass seamlessly through the system to your remote flash. Adjust your shutter speed, aperture or ISO and the system corrects for those changes. A ratio command set on the flash or command unit passes through the MiniTT1 to set the remotes. PocketWizard ControlTL radio communication allows you to shoot farther, faster, around corners, through walls even at high noon in bright daylight. Now you can deploy a wireless flash system wherever you want, without infrared limitations, in seconds.
Use the MiniTT1 for standard triggering with any PocketWizard Receiver including the FlexTT5, PlusII or MultiMAX. When used this way with a digital camera, you can take advantage of PocketWizard's HyperSync Technology that allows up to 1/500th of a second camera sync with many camera/strobe set-ups. HyperSync allows you to advance the timing of your flash trigger so that faster then X-sync speeds can be achieved.
Need more speed? Push your ControlTL system beyond 1/500th and go into FP/High-Speed sync mode automatically. No buttons to press or settings to change other then your shutter speed will give you flash sync all the way to 1/8000th.

Disappointing August 21, 2010 A. Henslee (Dallas, TX USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I generally don't take the time to write reviews of poor products, but I feel compelled to on these so that other photogs won't waste the money I did.
I've had my Flex/Minis for a while, now. They have, seriously, NEVER worked consistently. Every time I use them, it is a several hour process to get them all working. Then they stop working. Nothing changed, yet, they are no longer working.
My Plus IIs are rock solid. I plug them in, turn them on, click the shutter, and bam, I have light.
For the Flex(s) and Mini, I turn them on and proceed to troubleshoot for 2 hours, and then sometimes still don't have a triggering flash. Put them on the camera. Take them off the camera and plug them into the computer. Adjust them on the computer. Take them off the computer and back to the camera. Still no good. Return to the start and do this whole time-wasting cycle again. Insane.
I'm not some maladjusted internet troll looking for things to complain about. Read my other reviews.
These things are so bad, I seriously can't believe there hasn't been a class-action suit started. I think there is a real opportunity to affect some change from the manufacturer, via a class-action suit.
I would never use these on paid shoots.
Find some of these to test with your equipment, before you spend the money. Test them in a variety of environments.
Go read up on the entire saga with interference and the various ways you have to solve it.
Good but Expensive August 19, 2010 E. J Tastad (Marion, IA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Cons:
Special battery required
Special hardware to reduce interference between flash and trigger
Pros:
Works Well
ETTL
ETTL Pass through to primary flash on transmitter.
Bottom Line: Find a generic flash trigger that supports ETTL and pay a lot less.
I didn't have any issues when using the PocketWizard MiniTT1 transmitter and matching transceiver. ETTL exposures were good (fire a test shot first) as long as you have your camera set reasonably and the unit worked fine. Batteries are special cells, so will be more costly to replace than a standard cell.
C2 did not work with the first pair but replacement units did July 16, 2010 Nelson (Colorado) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought a MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 pair. Out of the box, the C1 setting worked but the C2 did not. Both units are at the latest 5.00 firmware level. I tried following trouble shooting steps but none helped.
1. Refreshed the firmware to 5.00 using the latest PocketWizard Utility 1.18.9.
2. Changed the C2 transmit and receive control TL channels on TT5 and transmit on TT1 to match TT5.
3. Reset the units by holding the test button for 10 seconds until the status light blinked green four times.
Called the PocketWizard support. They thought I did everything I could and the unit should work with the steps I did.
Created a RMA. Amazon promptly shipped replacement units. When using each of the replacement unit with the old pair, the problem still exists. However, the two replacement units worked together like they should!
It is still puzzling why such problem exists. But in the end, Amazon sent me the working units and that is all that matters!
...after using these for a while July 15, 2010 Robert S. Tobias (Arlington, VA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My experiences and the resulting review are the result of working with the transmitter (MiniTT1) and transceiver (FlexTT5) for a little while. Others have already posted copious reviews including massive amounts of useful details and chronicles of their pains in getting the units working.
Here is the bottom line: You need to load the firmware upgrades if your units don't come with them already installed. Once loaded you will have a rock solid wireless connection between your camera and your flash.
The competition: There are other "tiers" of wireless flash controllers available and different pricing levels. Cowboy studios and others have them for about 10% the cost and they work most of the time at distances of ten's to maybe 100 feet. There is tremendous variability because the actual manufacturer can change from one week to the next and quality control can be problematic. There is also no on-camera flash control. However, if you are, for example, shooting portraits in a studio setup these may not be a bad alternative. Alien Bee has wireless controllers for for about half the cost. A bit more if you want at-camera flash control and less if you don't. They are reliable and well built but the "at-camera" control unit is cumbersome and not well integrated to the camera.
The MiniTT1/FlexTT5 combo provide a wireless connection that acts as if your flash was attached to your camera. Beyond that, the MiniTT1 (transmitter) is very low profile. That's important if you're moving around a lot such as at a wedding. It's like working with nothing stuck to your camera (as opposed to the original pocketwizard that seemed to get caught on everything).
Here's the real bottom line: If you make money with a camera then any of the bottom tier units is just wrong. The Alien Bee can work well but the additional features features provided by this generation of PocketWizards probably make them your best choice.
PW Mini Rocks! July 10, 2010 W. Manipol (SUNLAND, CA, US) Great product to compliment the Flex TT5. There was a 15% coupon offered by Amazon which brought the price down. No brainer purchase for an awesome product!
